We all think, feel and react in different ways and so when seeking therapy it is important to find the right type of therapy that will best suit your individual needs. It is for this reason that I use an integrative approach with clients. Integrative therapy combines cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), psychodynamic therapy and humanistic therapy. I believe integrative therapy to be hugely useful during therapy sessions as it allows me the opportunity to adapt the therapy in order to apply the appropriate techniques to suit your needs and wants.

The initial consultation is when we will first meet. This session provides us with the opportunity to explore what you would like to achieve from counselling/psychotherapy whilst allowing time for you to ask any questions and find out more about the therapy sessions. During the consultation, time will be used to assess what therapy may be best for you. Importantly the session also ensures that you feel comfortable with continuing the therapy process.

The initial consultation

There are many different types of therapies that can be used by counsellors and psychotherapists. Some of these involve exploring past experiences and others involve looking at what is going on in the present.

The therapies tend to fall under the following categories:

• Cognitive and Behavioural therapies: Cognitive therapy focuses on thoughts and feelings behind behaviours and behaviour therapy focuses on changing behaviours and replacing them with healthier ones. Some therapists combine these two therapies, this is known as cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT)

• Psychodynamic therapy: Psychodynamic therapy focuses on unconscious processes which are manifested in an individuals present behaviour. The goal of this therapy is to gain self-awareness and understanding of the past and its influence on the present.

• Humanistic therapies: Humanistic therapy involves a variety of approaches. This type of therapy aims to encourage the client to recognise their ability to make choices in order to gain control of their lives and make positive choices about their direction.
